Where is Your Faith?

“But He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?'” (Luke 8:25)

Christian – take these words of Christ to the frightened fisherman as directed to your soul right now. It is a good question to ponder. The difficulties of life, the frustrations of living in a fallen world, our lack of power to change things that appear so wrong – all these things may cause us to behave as though we had no faith at all. Where is your faith? Our fears are often very visible. Our complaints make loud noises. It would be hard to miss our loud grumbles. But what of our faith? Where is it? Do we have so little confidence in our Lord that our lives hardly display any obvious trust in Him?

This is a very practical question. Where is your faith…today? Right now. At this moment. Who or what are you trusting in? Is your faith in better leadership, stronger economies, our constitution, our freedoms, our history, our strength? How are you managing that area of your life that is uncomfortable right now? Have you become bitter, angry, resentful, withdrawn, spiteful, stubborn, and sad? Where is your faith? Yes, the waves of life are crashing against the boat of your soul today. But is Christ in that boat? If so, then where is your faith?

Believer – you know Christ as Master. You respect His authority. You acknowledge His right to teach and instruct. His words are precious to you. What He says you will do. Jesus said to these fisherman “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” They did not hesitate a moment. The text says “And they launched out.” They were fully ready to follow the Lord’s instructions, as obedient disciples. I trust you are too. And even in the midst of the raging storm they acknowledged His authority, saying “Master, Master, we are perishing!” They knew Him as Master. But they were failing to fully trust Him as Savior and Lord.

Dear reader – Jesus is our Savior from the storm of our sins. The sea is deep, but our debt of sin was deeper. All the raging power of every storm that has ever happened is not equal to the infinite horror and guilt of even a single one of our sins. Place all the waters of the ocean on a scale, it is but a piece of dust when compared to the weight of even the smallest broken commandment of God. Consider this – Christ bore it all! The entire storm of God’s wrath for our sin was emptied out upon Christ on the cross.

Do you believe this? If so, then where is your faith? Having saved us from so terrible a tempest as our great iniquity is, shall He not save us from everything else that troubles us? Can He save us from Hell, but not from your current trial? Can He wash away all your sins, but not manage your present trouble? Where is your faith? Has He not granted you every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ? Has He not adopted you into His very family? Has He not sent you His Spirit and promised to keep you to the very end? Then what troubles you? Where is your faith? Oh if we would only consider all He has done and is doing for us, how it would strengthen our faith in Him today. John Calvin said this on Psalm 111, “He daily and constantly loads us with His benefits, so our faith must, in some measure, correspond with it.”

Where is your faith? Let it show today. Let the world know you trust Him. We live in troubled times. But our Lord is not troubled. So why should you or I be? The largest waves and strongest winds are subject to His word. They rise and fall as His command. There is nothing to fear with Christ in the ship of your soul. He is a very present help in trouble. Here is my faith O Lord! In You I put all my trust. “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God (Psalm 20:7).”
