The Folly of Serving Many Masters

“My name is Legion, for we are many.” Mark 5:9

It was a wise saying of Ambrose (c. 339 -397) when he remarked “How many masters does one have who has forsaken the One!” Those who have not Christ as their only Lord, will find out soon enough that they are serving many lords instead. And these lesser lords shall not deal kindly with your soul. You will find yourself the slave of money, and the slave of lust, and the slave of honor, and the slave of fear. Unhappiness are their wages. Discontent is all they give. Misery is the money they trade in. Legion will be your master if Christ be not your King.

This can happen in the life of a true believer as well. We see a small glimpse of this in the life of poor Martha, of whom Christ said “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things (Luke 10:41).” What a legion of troubles, worries, frets and fears become our master when we mistakenly give our heart to any but Christ alone. Believer, precious child of the living God, you cannot serve two masters. What makes you think you can serve 20? Serve the Lord, you will find it a gladness (Psalm 100:2). Serve the world and her many cruel masters, and it will ruin your soul.

Give honor to whom honor is due. But never forget Whom you really serve, “for you serve the Lord Christ (Col. 3:24).” May this be supremely evident in your life. Give every one of your faculties to Him who gave them first to you. Give Him your heart, your hands, your feet, your lips, your mind. Give Him the firstfruits of your day every morning in the joyful reading of His Word and the fragrant offering of hearty prayers. Keep an eye fixed upon Him always. Let His Word be the lamp to your feet and the light to your path. Look for opportunities to please Him every day. Speak up about His goodness, as that healed Gentile of Gadara quickly did in all Decapolis, proclaiming “all that Jesus had done for him (Mark 5:20).”
