Return! Come back!

“The watchman said, ‘The morning comes, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire; Return! Come back!” Isaiah 21:12

It’s dark right now. As I sit in my chair in the early morning I can see nothing out the window across from me. It’s quiet. I love these early morning hours. God so often blesses them to my soul. I’m thankful for a cup of warm coffee. A comfortable recliner. But most of all I’m thankful for God’s Word. Mornings are precious times to me. I’m also grateful for the night, when the days’ work is done and I can talk with my dear wife about her day and prepare myself for a night of rest. I praise God for this natural cycle of mornings and night.

The prophet here is likely taking the morning and night in a more spiritual sense. There is a precious and eternal morning of joy that is coming for every child of God one day. And, more soberly, there is a dreadful and fearful night approaching for every unbelieving soul. “The morning comes, and also the night.” There is coming for Christians a morning which, once begun, the sun will never set, but shine for all eternity in blessed joy and happiness. And there is coming for all God’s enemies a night without a dawn, a darkness that will never be broken by even a single ray of hope forever. These two great destinies are rapidly approaching. “The morning comes, and also the night.”

Friend – I believe our text is especially addressed to those who are presently headed toward this dreadful, eternal night of the soul. And it is calling upon you to ask important questions right now. What is the purpose of life? Why are we here? What am I to do about my sin? Who can deliver me? What shall I do to be saved? “If you will inquire, inquire!” Ask these questions my friend. Don’t put this off. These are the great questions upon which all of eternity hangs. Inquire! Inquire! Ask them first and foremost of God Himself. Bring your questions to His throne in prayer. Zephaniah speaks of those “who have turned back from following the Lord, and have not sought the Lord, nor inquired of Him (Zeph 1:6).” Inquire! Search His word for the answers. Take up your Bible and diligently search for the truth about salvation.

There is time yet to leave the path that leads to darkness, misery and an everlasting night, and to set upon that journey to the Celestial city as a child of the light. Christ is calling you to come. “Return! Come back!” By faith you may lay hold of Jesus who can cleanse your heart from sin and redeem you from the wrath of God that is coming as surely as the night is coming. Return! Come back! Why don’t you come now? Our text calls upon you to make no other preparations, but only to turn and come to the Lord. He will give you all that you need. Just return. Just come back. No one knows exactly when this morning and this night will come. But we know for sure it is coming.

Christian – I believe our text is also an invitation to you and I, to return from our backsliding and wanderings from the Lord. Oh the time we have wasted in all that is unprofitable for ourselves and others! Return! Come back! The day is at hand! “Let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Rom 13:12).” Let us prepare ourselves for that glorious morning of Christ’s return. Let us labor for the food that endures and never perishes. There comes an everlasting home! Jesus calls us back to Himself from our wanderings. Have you wandered from worship? Wandered from His word? Wandered from serving the saints? Wandered into paths of sin, bitterness, selfishness, ungodly company, prayerlessness, greediness, lustfulness, wasted time, rudeness, cruelty, and coldness? Here is a word for your soul today: “Return! Come back!”

The great Watchman of your soul is calling to you today. Will you hear Him?
