Make haste to Christ

“And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.” Luke 2:16

The shepherds made haste and went quickly to Christ. Oh that we would all do the same! If you are not a Christian this Christmas morning, I recommend that you go to Him quickly. I know you feel as though you have lots of time. You may have no sense of urgency. You have enough of religion, or maybe none at all. But either way you reckon that time is on your side. You are too young still, too healthy, too happy with this world and its ways. What’s the rush, right?

I wish you wouldn’t think that way. We all have less time than we think. But even if we could no for sure how long we will live, there is no good reason to live without Christ a moment longer. Why live day after day unforgiven? Why live day after day uncertain about eternity? Why live day after day with no hope and without God? Why live day after day only pursuing those things that will all one day be gone? “They came with. haste.” Why shouldn’t you?

It is not for want of an invitation that you delay. Sure, the shepherds had Angels to point them to Christ. But those same angels, could they speak to us now, would still be pointing you to Him. And you have even more reason to come. Christ Himself spoke to word of invitation to those shepherds. Still they came. But to you Jesus has said “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He calls you to make haste and come to Him. As Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house (Luke 19:5).” So Jesus would have you hasten to open up the door of your heart to Him today.

It is not for want of a reason that you delay. Have you not plenty of reasons to go to Him? Have you know sins to be forgiven? None? Surely your own heart tells you otherwise. And it is Jesus alone who can help you. “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.” Have you no sense of God? None? Surely you feel and know this life to be more than the result of matter and time and chance. A moral sense lingers in your heart and mind. God put it there. And you know that nothing in this world has thus far satisfied you. You long for Him that you do not know. But He calls you to come!

It is not that you have forever. You know that isn’t true. The all-too brief nature of life constantly presses in upon us. Thousands cross over every day. Hundreds we may have known years ago are already gone. Who is the person that has not tasted the sorrow of a lost life very close to them? A lost father or mother? A departed brother or sister? A dear friend? A beloved child? Not one soul you know has ever evaded the hand of death forever. A few short days from now the bell will toll for you and I. Are we ready? Only if we make haste to come to the Lord.

Dear friend, make haste to come to Christ today. Maybe you have been running from Him all your life. You can stop running now. Turn. Believe. Lay hold of Jesus by faith and surrender entirely to Him. What possible good can come from waiting any longer?
