Isaac’s 20 year prayer

“Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea.” Genesis 25:21

Sometimes the Lord answers prayers speedily. And a casual reading of the above text might incline us to think this was such an instance. Isaac pleaded. The Lord granted. Wow. It sounds as though Isaac prayed this at night, and began to build the nursery first thing in the morning. But the Holy Spirit provides additional details which we should carefully observe. In verse 20 we read “Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife.” It is reasonable to assume that Isaac’s pleading began not long after that. The following few verses describe the conception of the twins, Esau and Jacob, and their birth. But note that we read at the end of verse 26 “Isaac was sixty years old when she bore him.

Sixty years old! He was married to Rebekah at forty. Isaac pleaded with the Lord…it would appear…for twenty years!

Christian…let us not grow weary in our praying, especially in our prayers for our children. Plead with the Lord for them. Cry out to the Lord for them. Do not give up. Delays are not denials. Keep knocking upon Heaven’s door. Our kindly Father hears every petition and has planned the timing of His answer already.
