His Hand is Stretched Out Still

“For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.” Isaiah 9:17

While it is more pleasant to think of the pleasures of heaven, it is often needful to bear in mind the pains of Hell. Jesus Himself taught us more about this place of torment than any other writer in Scripture. He would have us mindful of the misery of those that leave this life unforgiven. Hell is a dreadful place of suffering. There the unrepentant will mourn their lost opportunity to close with Christ in this life. There will be, as Jesus said, “weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30).” But maybe the most terrible thing about Hell will be its permanence. Every morning in Hell, if there be any mornings, the condemned will awake to find “His hand is stretched out still.”

This hand of judgment and punishment will not be withdrawn forever and ever. A week will go by, then a month, then a year, then a hundred, a thousand, a million years. And this will be the one inescapable reality of life in Hell, “His hand is stretched out still.” Pleadings for relief will go up. Cries for mercy will ring out. Calls for deliverance will be made day after day. But “His hand is stretched out still” will be their only experience for all eternity. No soul in Hell will ever be able to change their condition. “His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back? (Isaiah 14:27).” Such a thought is almost to awful to think about. I write such things with no pleasure. But truth is truth, whether it pleases us or not. Will you not be moved by this, sinner? Does not the very eternity of His wrath on your sin stir up your conscience to seek safety now while you can? Oh what a misery to find yourself in that place of torment, darkness, that lake of fire that is never extinguished, that cup of wrath that is never fully emptied, but rather shall go on forever because “His hand is stretched out still.”

Reader – I must not let your go yet. I have warned of God’s stretched out hand of wrath. But right now He extends to you the hand of His mercy. By this He saved Israel “So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm (Deut 26:8).” The hand of grace through faith in Jesus Christ is extended to you today. He calls you. He beckons you. Lay hold of His hand and mighty arm. “I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people (Isaiah 65:2).” Fall into His hand today. You shall find it a strong and safe hand for your soul. Now, now, now is the time to plead like David, “Please let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are very great (1 Chron 21:13).”

Oh lay hold of His outstretched hand of mercy today. If those who are even now in Hell could warn you they would. Some have been there thousands of years already, and they would say to you that “His hand is stretched out still.” Hear their cry, repent and believe the gospel today. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
